Synopsis of Module

In this module, students will be introduced to the relevant IT resources available within NBS, such as the student network and their personal email facility. They will be introduced to the Internet as a tool for accessing module materials and information (from the Blackboard e-learning platform) and will use the Internet as a support tool for their academic studies. Students will gain competence with the Windows operating system and understand the principles of sound file management. Finally the module also seeks to ensure that students can use Word, PowerPoint and Excel to a competent level in order to complete coursework to a professional standard.

Aims of Module

1.The aim of this module is to introduce and develop IT skills relevant to working in business that will also be used to support the students in their studies throughout the rest of their academic programme.
2.The module aims to introduce students to the basic PC based IT skills, will encourage good file management, as well as developing effective use of Word and PowerPoint.
3.The module will introduce the Internet as a tool for academic research.
4.Students will also be introduced to the Excel spreadsheet as a tool for analysis and model building.
5.Towards the end of the module students will identify the potential for integrating the various IT applications.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be able to:

1.Understand the basic features of various PC based IT applications and efficient file management.
2.Use the Windows operating system, Word, PowerPoint and Excel to a competent level in order to complete coursework to a professional standard.
3.Identify the relevance and application of the various software tools in business and their role as a support to academic study.
4.Understand how to integrate the various software applications.
5.Use the Internet effectively as a tool to support learning.

Outline Syllabus

1.Introduction to the Northumbria University IT systems and Blackboard e-learning platform.
2.An introduction to Computers and Windows XP.
3.Using the Internet for information retrieval and as a study support tool.
4.Word-processing with Word 2000.
5.Business presentations using PowerPoint.
6.Spreadsheets using Excel.
7.Integration of the software tools.

Summative assessment

The assessment is 100% by case based assignment.
