Synopsis of Module

This Module is about improving students' chances of getting a graduate level job. These include practising such skills as interviewing, doing the types of Psychometric tests used by employers, learning about the graduate job market, improving CVs and Application Forms and participating in negotiation exercises. Lectures will be given by graduate recruiters, the University Careers Service and NBS Placements Office with workshops devoted to specific job application based activities. Assessment is by presenting a portfolio of evidence demonstrating preparation for graduate employment.

Aims of Module

This module aims to develop knowledge of available career paths for NBS graduates and improve skills in career-related activities with particular reference to employment applications.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the Module students will be able to:

1.Devise and self-evaluate against a realistic career plan informed by awareness of work-related skills, abilities, values and interests
2.Evaluate sources of information on relevant career opportunities including use of Prospects Planner and the graduate milk round
3.Analyse elements of the graduate labour market
4.Complete a CV and covering letter to a professional standard
5.Complete a Standard Application Form
6.Recognise the leading forms and functions of psychometric testing
7.Prepare effectively for job interviews (identification of likely interview questions and preparation of answers)
8.Prepare effectively for assessment centres (knowledge of and participation in common assessment centre exercises including inbox tests, negotiation exercises and round-table discussions)

Career choice, planning and development including identification of skills, abilities, interests and values and using feedback from current and former employers
The graduate labour market
Researching career and placement options - the effective use of information including Prospect Planner and the graduate milk round
Making effective applications - Covering Letters, CVs, Application Forms, Testimonials and References
Recruitment and Selection Procedures - Job Descriptions, Person Specifications, Interviews, Psychometric Tests and Assessment Centres
Measuring Career Management Performance
