Synopsis of Module

This module explores the legal relationship between employers and employees. Topics to be studied include the nature of the employment relationship; creation and contents of a contract of employment; wrongful and unfair dismissal; discrimination; redundancy; and transfer of undertakings.

Aims of Module

This module aims to:

1.Examine the legal incidents of a contract of employment
2.Consider how the law regulates the relationship of employer-employee
3.Explore the interaction of case law, statute law and law emanating from the European Community.
4.Enable students to find and apply the laws relating to the employment relationship

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module the student will be able to:

1.Examine the features of the employment relationship
2.Explain and apply the law relating to the creation of a contract of employment and the sources of terms of such contract
3.Explain and apply the law relating to the employment relationship eg termination of employment; discrimination; redundancy
4.Analyse fact scenarios and provide legal solutions to problems raised
5.Undertake independent legal research to find relevant employment law sources
6.Examine the social and economic context of employment law

Unlawful Discrimination: Sex, Race and Disability discrimination
