Synopsis of Module

This module examines the role of information provision in management decision-making and control. In this regard, special reference is made to the accounting function. A broad approach is taken which emphasises the holistic nature of the subject. This includes an interest in the nature of information, and its relation to management and an interest in the tools, techniques and technologies that underpin the development of management information systems. Hence, practical sessions are utilised to demonstrate and practise the skills required for the effective management of information resources. The module is assessed by an examination, and a practical case based group assignment.

Aims of Module

This module intends to :

1.Explore the role of information and the purpose of an information system, within the modern business context
2.Relate the notions of information and information system to the managerial activities of planning, control and decision making.
3.Introduce the approach of examining a business organisation as a system.
4.Examine the tools, techniques and technologies that underpin the development of management information systems.
5.Provide an opportunity for participants to engage in an information systems design and development process.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module:

1.Analyse and evaluate the role of information and information systems in managerial planning, control and decision making.
2.Analyse business activities using the principles and concepts of systems thinking.
3.Understand and identify the managerial challenges and legal responsibilities that are associated with information management
4.Select, utilise and apply a range of systems design and development techniques within a structured information systems analysis, design and development methodology.
5.Exercise significant judgement and accept responsibility by participating in an active role in the design, development and implementation of an accounting related management information systems.
