Support Pathway Rev 9

In the support disciplines pathway students' studies in Accounting are underpinned by studies in a number of support disciplines.

Economics/Management

Throughout the first year students study Management. In semester 1 students study a theoretical Economics module Financial Environments and Markets which provides a base for more applied studies in Business Organisation in semester 2. These modules provide a foundation for more advanced and specialised studies in Management Information Systems in semesters 3 and 4.

Law

Students are given a general introduction to law in The Legal Environment in semester 2 and this provides the base for a study of Company Law in semester 3. Legal requirements as they impinge on auditing and corporate financial reporting are incorporated into the relevant financial pathway modules.

Quantitative Methods

All students entering the course are required to have a minimum competence in mathematics. Applied quantitative techniques within a business environment are developed in Data Analysis - a double module spanning semesters 1 and 2. This module provides a basis for more focused studies in Business Statistics in semester 3. Students wishing to progress their studies further in this area should take the Management Science for Accountants option in semester 4.

Skills

In semester 2 of the first year students take Computer Applications in Accounting, a  module which develops the knowledge acquired in the first semester within the specific areas of finance, management accounting and financial accounting studied at level 1.

Option

Because the programme needs to be highly structured in order to maximise professional accreditation there is only one opportunity to study an option - in semester 4.
