Our aim is to encourage the student to participate effectively in the learning process. This will enable him/her to develop personal skills of analysis and synthesis. It will also make students more fluent and experienced in communicating ideas, opinions and conclusions. We will also seek to develop students' interpersonal skills by encouraging group work in which students will collaborate with other students on a common project.

This will involve students working closely together analysing a problem, subdividing the task and assigning responsibilities, pooling results and arguing conclusions, and collectively presenting and defending results.

The course employs a range of teaching methods appropriate to the particular task in hand. Teaching programmes typically comprise a combination of lectures, seminars and practical sessions. The following is a brief description of the role of each.

lecture

Lectures

These are teacher led sessions in which the lecturer will:

provide an initial outline of the subject, giving a framework for further study;
present information in a cohesive manner when such information has not been consolidated elsewhere; demonstrate the use of analytical and other techniques.

seminar

Seminars

These are student participation sessions involving smaller groups of students and one or more members of the teaching staff for the purpose of subject based discussions, often following a short presentation by an individual student or a group of students.

Students will be encouraged to explore a topic in some depth for the purposes of the seminar presentation. This is an extremely important part of the course. Students will find that they develop research and presentation skills as well as a facility for working within a group on a common task.

Practical sessions/workshops

These periods are devoted to problem-solving activities under the supervision of one or more members of the teaching staff. They may include case studies and the use of computer packages, These sessions will be used mainly in furthering studies in the application of quantitative techniques and technical aspects of the accounting syllabuses.
